Actually evidence from years of our Grad DipTESSOL at Univ of Auckland shows the following :TESSOL as we did it shows that
finding the balance between direct instruction and exploration inquiry is structurally inherently built into the whole philosophy approach research evidence of UOA TESSOL This includes ;building on students family backgrounds lives and experiences as the best starting basis for effective learning& development ; using an Instructional Scaffolding framework; An integrated approach to talk, read, share, discuss, draw map using semantic mapping for planning&implementation;semantic and syntactic vocabulary development ;functions or purposes (text types/genre)for language use and how within these there levels of grammatical complexity; These TESOL have long proven far more effective than traditional literacy approaches for native speakers principles ; They need to underpin and be embedded in all literacy work at all stages. Finally it shows that work needs to begin with and then rotate between Direct Instruction and Inquiry follow on tasks with the gradual release of responsibility and ongoing feedback-and instruction.Worth noting that for many years AK ERO made it clear that students whose teachers are graduates of the UOA Dip TESSOL are in fact the best taught and most successful language and cultural minority students in the region.
Thank you so much for sharing this discussion. It is amazing to hear people who actually know what it's like to be teachers & teach! I wished our government(s) listened to you guys more.
(IMHO our current government is acting especially in bad faith)
I absolutely loved what Leanne had to say, a particularly astute observation from her regarding the government rhetoric of "an hour reading & an hour writing" everyday & how that can give people outside of education the impression that, that is not already happening in schools.
I do think that one of the obstacles we have is the PR aspect of education. A not small too amount of people do NOT have a high opinion of schools. I don't know how to change that but I do know it needs to start at the community level.
